Special Nutritional Needs: Intolerances and Allergies
-
We are happy to provide alternative meal options for those with documented intolerances and/or allergies. To provide an accomodation, we must receive a note signed from a physician. Please use the forms on the Right side of this page. Reach out to Jenna Anthony at jranthony@oregonsd.net or 608-835-4057 for any questions or to set up an alternative menu for your student.
Lactose Intolerance
Having a lactose intolerance means that your body is not able to digest the sugar found naturally in milk. If you are suffering from a lactose intolerance you may be able to drink milk treated with a lactaid product, which will either break down the sugar for you, or help you to do it. These products are available in tablet or drop form. There is also a brand of lactaid or lactose-free milk on the market. If you do not drink milk you need to be sure to get sufficient calcium from other sources. Most people who are lactose intolerant are able to tolerate small servings of hard cheeses or yogurt. These are excellent sources of calcium. Some vegetables, such as broccoli, white beans, Chinese cabbage, green cabbage, cauliflower, and calcium-set tofu also have calcium. Calcium supplements are also available. If your student is lactose intolerant, please be sure that we have the physician's order from your doctor on file in the Food Service Office. When we have such a note, we will be happy to provide a substitute for your student to drink with their school lunch.
Food Allergies
Food allergies are becoming more apparent in children. The most common allergies we have seen at school are allergies to peanuts and eggs. We have also seen allergies to chicken, soy, turkey, and tomato products. Food allergies can be very mild, or life-threatening. If your child has a food allergy, it is very important that the Food Service Office has been informed. Please be sure your child's medical records are up to date. In cases of food allergies we may need to contact parents and doctors so we are able to meet your child’s needs.
