Schools of Hope

  • The Schools of Hope Program (SOH) is a program run through the Urban League of Greater Madison which aims to address the gap in academic achievement in Madison area schools. Working closely with schools, SOH recruits, trains and matches tutors with struggling students to ensure that all students are adequately prepared to successfully complete academic subjects when they enter high school.

    Schools of Hope got its start in 1996 from a civic journalism project of the Wisconsin State Journal and WISC-TV3. The United Way of Dane County took the lead in pulling together a number of community partners including the Urban League of Greater Madison, UW-Madison and local parents and youth. In the fall of 2008, the United Way extended the SOH Middle School program to offer tutoring services at Oregon Middle School.

    Schools of Hope at Oregon Middle School is focused on improving academic achievement and preparing students for success in high school.  Volunteers help students by encouraging, mentoring and modeling skills in organization, math, literacy, completing projects, etc.

    • Ability to effectively communicate and an understanding of the needs of underachieving students.
    • Ability to establish and maintain a trusting and positive relationship with middle and high school students.
    • Second language skills, particularly Spanish, Hmong, and Cambodian are highly desirable.
    • A background free of convictions for serious offenses as determined by School District guidelines.
