Fall 2021 Online Option

Online learning this coming fall will be different from what students experienced during the 2020-2021 school year. Questions about your student-specific needs should be directed to your student's building administrator. If you have a question that is not answered here, feel free to email questions@OregonSD.org.

There will be an option for students to select a blended schedule (1-2 online courses) and an option for students to be fully online (the full online option will be very different from what was offered last year). Both options require an application process to ensure that the format is appropriate for your student. Review FAQs for additional information or contact our Online/Blended Learning Coordinator, Jennifer Schmitt, at jaschmitt@OregonSD.org.
Blended Learning Schedule (1-2 online classes)
- OHS has a rich tradition of blended course schedules (1-2 online courses); pre-pandemic, about 40% of our OHS graduates engaged in at least one online course prior to graduation.
- Students participate in-person, and have blended learning activities for 1-2 courses in their schedules.
- Courses are taught by either OSD instructors or by WI licensed instructors if the class is not offered at OHS.
Full Online Learning
- Curriculum and instruction will be provided by WI licensed instructors from one of OSD’s online learning partners, Edmentum or Stride Learning.
- Learning will be asynchronous (not real time) and requires parental / caregiver support.

Will there be an OSD contact to help?
Yes. There will be an OSD liaison assigned to fully online students who will check in with students and families once per week.
-
How long do I have to commit to the full online instructional model?
Families who are signing up for the online option will be asked to make at least a one semester commitment to online learning. The OSD liaison will be available to work with families and create learning plans to help ensure that all students are successful.
We also understand that vaccinations for students under age 12 may impact a family’s desire for in-person instruction; requests to return to in-person will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

-
How were the 3rd party learning partners, Edmentum and Stride Learning, selected for full online instruction?
The OSD Online Coordinators evaluated several online learning products. To be considered, products had to be aligned to Wisconsin Academic Standards and be easy for parents and students to use. Other factors considered were feedback from OSD families who have used the product in the past, the robustness of the program, the ease of providing course materials, the variety of course offerings, and the company reputation.
-
What if we want to change our mind about full online learning before the semester is over?
Families who are signing up for the online option will be asked to make at least a one semester commitment to online learning. We understand that vaccinations for students under age 12 may impact a family’s desire for in-person instruction; requests to return to in-person will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
-
Will fully online students be required to come into schools?
Yes, for assessments which are required to be in person, such as proctored assessments, and state tests.
-
How do I know if the fully online option is best for my student?
It is important to recognize that the asynchronous learning format does not work for every student. Students who are successful with online learning tend to be able to:
- Effectively navigate technology
- Work independently
- Ask for help when they have questions or need guidance
- Effectively organize and manage their time
- Actively engage with class material and independently complete assignments
-
What is my role as a parent / caregiver in supporting my student(s) with full online learning?
Parents/caregivers share in the responsibility of helping students stay on track. Parents/caregivers can support students by:
- Set a daily routine for learning and review the weekly schedule and work responsibilities with your student.
- Ensuring that your student has an appropriate learning space (a desk near an outlet) and that typical school supplies are available (paper, crayons, markers, pencils, etc.)
- Proactively communicate with OSD liaison
-
How will my student receive services like ELL, advanced learning, and special education services?
Students will continue to receive services and will be determined on a case-by-case basis. An OSD staff member will work with each family to determine the appropriate support for individual students.
-
Is there a fully online instructional option for 4K learners?
No. There will not be an online program for 4K learners this fall. Early Learning / 4K programming information will be sent to families in an email from 4K Principal, Mary Hermes.
If you have specific questions about 4K instruction, please contact 4K Principal, Mary Hermes, at mghermes@OregonSD.org.
-
When will health and safety procedures be finalized?
The updated CDC guidance for schools was released on July 9 and WI DHS is currently reviewing it. This will be followed by a PHMDC review and an issuance of guidance. We will make decisions about fall safety measures as soon as we have all of the input from the health experts. We plan to share an update at the regularly scheduled board meeting on August 9.
