Unit 3 - Comida - Food
-
The third unit is about FOOD! This is always a student favorite. This unit is heavy on vocabulary and not as focused on sentence structure. To aid the acquisition of so many vocabulary words, we use a basic sentence structure "Me gusta..." ("I like..."). The goals of this unit are:
- Be able to identify a variety of foods from each food group.
- Be able to express what foods you like and dislike.
- Be able to ask someone else what foods he/she likes
- Be able to recognize patterns with food vocabulary words (all nouns) and if the word is singular or plural. Being able to identify these types of patterns in language is a key part of learning language and building the skills to use language in a variety of ways. In this unit, our simple sentence starters (Me gusta...) will have a small change when the food word is plural.
- Me gusta el chocolate. Me gusta la piña. ("Me gusta..." goes with singular food words)
- Me gustan los espaguetis. Me gustan las uvas. ("Me gustan..." goes with plural words)
- CULTURE:
We will be watching a series of short videos about kids in Spanish speaking countries. The videos highlight daily life and meals that could be considered typical for that country. Students will keep notes throughout the videos and then do a synthesis activity at the end to compare and contrast the different countries.
FINAL ASSESSMENT: Students will have a basic comprehension test, matching vocabulary words. Next unit will combine various skills from that unit and all previous units, so students will be able to demonstrate higher level skills at that time.
