Schedule Change Policy
It is important for students to make accurate initial course selections. Students initiating changes to their courses will be limited in the following manner:
.
v Final schedules will be completed prior to the start of each semester.
v Students must be enrolled in six class assignments per semester.
v When the semester begins, students may request to drop/add a course within three school days only for the following reasons:
t The student has not completed necessary prerequisite coursework.
t The student requires a different course as the result of a failure in a previous course.
t There is agreement among the student’s guidance counselor, a building administrator and affected teacher(s) that the student’s educational program will be improved by a course change.
t The student is required to change a class section or course as a result of meeting any of the above criteria.
v Some examples of schedule change requests which may not be deemed acceptable include a desire to change from the assigned teacher, course requests that are unbalanced for a given semester, concerns about students enrolled in a given course, and the desire to change lunch or RAP periods.
v Requests explaining the educational rationale for students to make schedule changes after the three day period must be made in writing by the student and his/her parent or guardian to the guidance counselor.
v The counselor will review the request with a building administrator to determine if the request will be honored.
The following criteria will be used to approve schedule change requests:
v The teacher recommends that the student is inappropriately placed in a course.
v There is agreement among the student’s guidance counselor, a building administrator, and affected teacher(s) that the student’s educational program will be improved by a course change. If an agreement among the above parties cannot be reached, a building administrator will make the final decision regarding the student’s program.
v The student is required to change a class section or a course as a result of meting any of the above criteria.
v Students who choose to drop a course without approval after the three-day period will receive the grade of “F” for the semester.
