OHS Policies & Procedures

The following policies and procedures are in effect for all students at Oregon High School.  Theses are some, but not all, of our expectations for our students.  Copies of Board of Education policies and all other pertinent building handbooks are available in the administrative and guidance offices.  Board policies are also available online through the district website at www.oregonsd.org.  During the school year it may be necessary to make changes to policies and procedures on an as-needed basis.  Mr. Cherry is responsible for students whose last names begin with A - K (835-4303).  Ms. Bergstrom is responsible for students whose last names begin with L - Z (835-4302).

Behavior/Discipline

As directed by state law, a code of classroom conduct has been developed by the school district.  The intent of this code is to develop guidelines identifying appropriate student behavior and the behaviors that would result in a student being removed from a classroom.  The decisions to remove a student from a classroom are made in a partnership between the classroom teacher and administration.

The following behaviors are expectations of all students:

v      Show respect for fellow students, staff, guest speakers, substitute teachers, and staff requests

v      Show respect for school and personal property

v      Comply with all classrooms and school rules related to behavior and attendance

v      Maintain honest and ethical behavior related to school and student property, schoolwork, and the use of computers

v      Students are not to leave school grounds without a blue pass from attendance unless they are part of a school program that requires leaving school grounds

v      Students are not allowed to use or wear personal headsets/walkman/discman/radios/TV/pagers/cell phones/ video games during school hours (8:00 - 3:30)

v      Students who have earned RAP privileges may use these devices only during their scheduled RAP period while they are in the commons area

The following are NOT tolerated at OHS:

v      Possession and/or use of illegal drugs, unauthorized prescription drugs, counterfeit drugs, inhalants such as nitrous oxide, alcohol or the paraphernalia related to the use of drugs

v      Possession and/or use of a weapon

v      Possession and/or use of firecrackers, smoke bombs, and other disruptive or incendiary devices

v      Possession and/or use of pagers, portable telephones, and other two-way communication devices

v      Possession of laser pointers

v      Initiation of false fire alarms and/or false bomb threats

v      Violence aggression, threatening behavior through harassment, intimidation, bigoted epithets, vandalism, force, or threat of force

v      Gang-related behavior including symbols, apparel, initiations, hazings, intimidation, or related gang type activities

v      False emergencies

v      Gambling and wagering

v      Loitering in the building or on school grounds without an adult supervisor approved by this school

v      Any kind of harassment related to sex, sexual orientation, race, creed, color, or religious preference

Consequences for Unacceptable Behavior

The following is a list of consequences for
unacceptable behavior at
Oregon High School

Alternative Learning Attendance Center (ALAC)

When a student’s behavior in class is unacceptable and initial attempts to correct the behavior have not met with success, the student is referred to the ALAC room.  He/she has (5) five minutes to arrive and must immediately work to correct the problem.  If the student is late for ALAC or does not report, the student is subject to further consequences, including suspension.  The form used by the student to correct behavior is called a “work it out sheet.”  On the bottom of the form is a place for the student and his/her parent/guardian to sign.  The student must return the form to the teacher, complete with necessary signatures, prior to the start of school the following school day in order to be readmitted to class.  It is extremely important that the parent sign the form because this is a vehicle the school uses to communicate.  If parents have any questions regarding the incident at hand, please contact the teacher at school.  A student may request a conference with the teacher and a counselor or administrator.  It is our hope that through the use of the ALAC room, students become more aware of how their behaviors affect others and that they learn to accept responsibility for those behaviors.

Conference

Student(s) involved in unacceptable behavior meet with administration, staff, and/or others to discuss the situation, the effects of their activities, and solutions to the situation and/or preventative measure to avoid future challenges.  A behavior contract may be established.

Loss of Responsibility and Privilege Program – Students

If the student is currently taking advantage of the RAP program he/she will be assigned to a regular study hall for a set period of time.

Bus Consequence

Unacceptable behavior on the bus may result in parent notification/warning, assigned seating, and/or loss of bus riding privileges.  Other school and police actions may also be taken.

Detentions

Staff members may detain students after school to make up work or disciplinary action related to tardiness, truancy, inappropriate behavior or lack of preparedness.  Under normal circumstances, the student is granted a one-day “grace period” to make arrangements for the detention.  Students who are employed must make arrangements with their employer to serve their detentions.  Students who fail to serve an assigned detention will receive additional consequences.

In-School Suspension

Occasionally, the behavior of a student is such that he/she must be assigned to In-School Suspension in place of regularly scheduled classes.  The length of the assignment may be from one class period to several periods.  The primary purpose of In-School Suspension is to provide an alternative to Out-of-School Suspension.  Students receive constant supervision and academic assignments from their teachers while their social privileges are diminished.  The student is expected to follow ALAC/ISS guidelines to avoid an Out-of-School Suspension.

Out-of-School Suspension

Suspension is one of the disciplinary measures which maybe employed when students are unwilling to change their negative behavior, when students are deemed a danger to themselves or others, when students repeatedly violate school rules and policies, or when deemed appropriate by the building administration.  In each case, the student is provided an opportunity to express his/her point of view concerning the circumstances of their case.

Police Action

Depending on the severity or repetition of the student’s behavior, the School Resource Officer and/or law enforcement officials may be notified.  Actions taken by law enforcement officials will be in accordance with local, state, and federal laws and ordinances.

Expulsion

In accordance with state law, where the Board of Education dictates, a student may be expelled from school attendance (Policy 8.10, Appendix B)
