OMS Guest Speaker Request:
357 Guest Speakers
357.01 The Board encourages the use of guest speakers in classrooms to enhance
student learning and achievement. The following criteria must be followed
when using guest speakers:

  1. The subject matter addressed by the guest speaker must be consistent with and in furtherance of the approved curriculum.
  2. If the guest speaker addresses one view of a controversial topic, the teacher shall have plans to present the other side(s) of the topic so as to present the issue in a balanced and unbiased manner. The biases and prejudices of each speaker should be fully disclosed to the students.
  3. No District employee shall use guest speakers to advocate for a certain position or action to be taken by students or to attempt to indoctrinate students to a particular position.
  4. The subject matter addressed by the guest speaker should be appropriate for the age and maturity of the students.
357.02 Teachers wishing to use a guest speaker shall submit a written request to the building principal, within two (2) weeks of the anticipated use, outlining the purpose for using the guest speaker. The principal shall review the request in light of the factors set forth above and provide the teacher with a timely response. If the principal denies the request, the teacher may appeal the decision to the Superintendent who shall act upon the matter and report his/her response to the Board. The Board shall have final authority regarding questions arising from the curricular use of guest speakers.
