OMS PBIS/RtI site

Links, videos, information about PBIS for OMS staff.

"Many PBS schools experience decreases in referrals relating to tardiness, disrespect and insubordination. Consequently, suspension and expulsion are used less frequently as disciplinary options.
PBS involves a change of focus from reaction —constantly pointing out what students do wrong—to proactive teaching and recognizing what children are doing right. It establishes positive relationships between teachers and students, and promotes a positive school climate.
“Why spend ninety-five percent of the time focusing on five percent of the students?” asked Stephanie Martinez. “The PBS model shifts attention away from inappropriate behavior and recognizes the eighty-to-eighty-five percent of students acting appropriately." (source)

OMS Literacy Moodle

Melissa Mader has created a Moodle site (let me know if you need help with this) that includes many Literacy resources for the staff.  Last year, we focused on creating word walls to teach content area vocabulary.  They are an effective tool to keep vocabulary present in the students' minds as they learn new concepts.

Feel free to peruse the site and let me know if you would like assistance in setting up a word wall in your classroom.  I'm also more than willing to come in and model these lessons or the five strategies from the yellow literacy folder.

Thank you and I hope you're enjoying your first few weeks at OMS.

Melissa

OMS Online Database

This online tool since 2007-2008 school year where you can view the refocus log, detention log, etc. It can also store other data we deem relevant to help us fulfill our mission/vision and beliefs. It was developed to help facilitate the desire to have more methods of communication of information in the building.

OMS Online Referral
This can be used as an alternative to make a referral to the office. As a friendly reminder, please include the previous interventions you have used as a teacher and team before referring this student. Other uses of office referrals are for more serious issues that extend beyond the usual team/teacher, general interventions. No matter what, it is always good to know how the conversation went, when you confronted the student(s)  regarding his/her/their behavior(s).

OMS Guest Speaker Request Form
Here you can request a guest speaker for your classroom/team.

Video for Instructional Use Request/Log

In accordance with Board of Education policy 351 a log is to be held for all videos used for instructional use. For OMS PG-13 and R rated movies send notification home of video use to parents and have an alternative curriculum available for the video if the parent(s) or guardian(s) of the student opt them out. For PG-13 or R rated movies please give enough lead time to receive approval via email from administration. This is a similar procedure to the one used at OHS.

Board Policy 157 Anit-Harassment / Discrimination Policy

I mention on the OMS PBIS public site how bullying and harassing increase in middle school years. I also provide the link to our BOE policy. I have put it here for your reference. The policy applies to both staff and students, they are not separated.
