Rome Corners Guidance and
Counseling Program
GENERAL INFORMATION
Parent communication is very important and we welcome your active participation in your child’s personal growth and academic success. Parents are welcome to call at anytime. If we are not available at the time you call, please leave a message that includes your name, a phone number where you can be reached and also good times for us to return your call. As part of this partnership, we will be featuring articles in the school newsletters.
CLASSROOM DEVELOPMENTAL GUIDANCE
All Rome Corners students participate in classroom lessons and activities with a guidance counselor. Lessons are approximately 40 minutes and are delivered throughout the school year. The curriculum has been carefully developed to provide topics that will meet the needs of students and help with their personal and social growth.
5th Grade Topics: Peer Pressure, Personal Boundaries and Harassment, Working Cooperatively, Learning Styles, Study Skills and Coping with Stress.
6th Grade Topics: Effective Communication, Problem Solving, Careers and Leisure Activities.
INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING SESSIONS
Classroom guidance and small group settings do not always provide enough time or an appropriate place to talk with students. Students, teachers, principals, and parents may request individual guidance times. There may also be times when we feel we need to invite a student to see us. In these meetings, we often talk about the same topics that are covered in classroom guidance, but in an individualized way. Sessions are usually 30 minutes in length. Students are generally scheduled during a study hall or part of a lunch period.
PARENT RESOURCES
We believe a mutually helpful relationship with parents is important. Your ideas are welcome and we are happy to share ours with you. Books, tapes, and videos on parenting and various child- rearing issues are available in our offices for parent use. The district, at various times throughout the school year, offers parenting classes.
