OHS Clubs and Activities

Art Club

Art Club is an after school club that provides students the opportunity to be creative, socialize, and serve the school community.  Art Club allows students to participate in positive and fun activities that are inclusive of all students.  This organization is open to all high school students and allows for seasonal participation to accommodate other activities.  Art Club is a great place to be on a Wednesday afternoon and is always open to new ideas for growth and service.

Badger State

Badger State is a program for students who have completed their junior year of high school.  Students are selected during the second semester of their junior year based on academics, leadership, and citizenship.  Two males and two females are chosen to attend the week-long program which focuses on citizenship, civic responsibility, and governmental functions.

Baseball – Boys (Spring Sport)

This is a competitive team on all levels that looks to improve the skill of all of its players.  The overall goal for our program is to give every player on each team a great baseball experience.  We expect to compete for the conference championship every year.  The varsity team makes special trips to Miller Park and to the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Basketball – Boys (Winter Sport)

Oregon Panther Boys’ Basketball is a proud member of the Badger South Conference.  The Panthers field competitive teams at the freshman, JV and varsity levels.  Players are selected for each team during tryouts the first week of practice in November.  Tryouts are open to all male students.  There are numerous opportunities for individuals to improve year round, including open gyms, summer camps, summer leagues, summer tournaments, and summer school weight training and conditioning.

Basketball – Girls (Winter Sport)

Interested in playing basketball?  There are three teams:  freshmen, JV, and varsity.  We have lots of fun supporting each other throughout the season.  We mostly have practices everyday after school and sometimes before school when we do not have games.  Throughout the season we progress and try to get better.  We are all about supporting each other and taking pride in everything we do.  All in all, girls basketball is the best and we encourage you to try out and show your skill.

Chautauqua

The Chautauqua is the high school student-run literary magazine.  Student editors and staff solicit cool poetry, artwork, prose and opinion pieces for publication three to four times a year.  If you like to think and write, you will be interested in working for Chautauqua.

Cheerleading (Fall & Winter Sport)

Cheerleading is open to any student (male or female).  The basic requirement is commitment to the sport and a willingness to work hard.  We cheer for football, basketball, and compete in selected competitions November through March.  Cheerleading in high schools in Wisconsin is recognized and endorsed by the WIAA in conjunction with the Wisconsin Association of Cheer/Pom Coaches; the official state organization for cheerleading and dance in the state.

Computer Club

The Computer Club is a group of students interested in learning more about computer science.  Some of the more popular activities are competing in programming competitions at UW-Oshkosh and UW-Parkside and our end-of-the-year internal competition (with prizes).

Cross Country (Fall Sport)

Everyday practice is a challenge, not only physically, but also mentally.  Oregon CC involved hard work, dedication, and commitments.  However, your rewards will be worth all the sweat.  Improving your times, achieving your goals, making bonds with your teammates, acquiring mental toughness, feeling of pride in your accomplishments, and experiencing the joy of running are only a few of the rewards from Oregon CC.  Oregon CC is much more than simply running; other activities include spaghetti dinners, pancake breakfasts, camp outs, sleep overs, winter running, and summer running.

 

Oregon CC is a great way for anyone with our without running experience to become acclimated to OHS and learn valuable life lessons.  It will not be easy, but the rewards will definitely be worth the effort!

DECA

DECA is an association of marketing students.  Local membership is given to all students in marketing classes.  The local chapter is led by officers who plan activities based on four different categories:  Œ social intelligence (plan dances and attend meetings with marketing executives),  civic conscientiousness (support community organizations), Ž leadership development (attend summer workshops), and  career awareness (prepare for a career in marketing).

Drama Club

Are you interested in theater?  Do you enjoy acting, singing, tech work, or all three?   Then join the OHS Drama Club!  Maybe you have a secret passion for theater, but you just do not know it yet!  So come and learn about all the different aspects of theater and how each one is important.  Whether your dream is to grace the stage or to manage the stage; this is the club for you.  We hold student workshops and even travel to shows in the surrounding communities.  We work together with any current shows at OHS.  We encourage you to be part of this experience.

FBLA

Future Business Leaders of America is a nonprofit educational association of students preparing for careers in business and business related fields.  Students have the opportunity to participate in leadership workshops and compete for regional, state, and national awards throughout the year.

FCCLA

Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America is a dynamic and effective national career and technical student organization.  The organization helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through family and consumer sciences education.  Membership is open to anyone who has taken a FACE class in middle school or high school.

FFA

This is a great club where you can practice your leadership.  This club is about helping students prepare for the future.  There are many different seminars that members attend over the years.  In this club you also serve the community by doing different service projects.  This is the club to join if you are interested in a career in agriculture or agribusiness.

Football (Fall Sport)

Football is a sport which teaches players skills and strategies to work together to achieve a common goal, whether it is on the football field or in the classroom.  Athletes have numerous opportunities to strive for excellence individually and as a team.  You will develop confidence and discipline in a supportive yet demanding environment.  Weight programs, two day practices, playing a game in the rain or mud, and the “Big Hit” are all experiences that you will share with anyone who has ever played the game.  The camaraderie, hard work, and attaining goals will all be rewarding.

Forensics

Want to have fun and become better at public speaking?  Join forensics!  You can perform with friends in two categories:  group interpretive or play acting.  You can also go compete individually in farrago, poetry, story telling, demonstration, radio prose, and extemporaneous categories.  Win awards, have lots of fun, lose the butterflies, and meet new people from both OHS and other Wisconsin schools.

ECOS

ECOS (Environmentally Concerned Oregon Students) is a great group to join if you are interested in helping the environment.  Throughout the school year, we are involved in many projects, including cleaning up parks, and promote student recycling.  In spring, we grow plants and sell them to raise money for the group.  Towards the end of the school year we help the second grade class at Netherwood Knoll plant trees in the park.  If you would like to be actively involved in taking care of our community environment, we encourage you to join ECOS.

Gay-Straight Student Alliance

The Gay-Straight Alliance strives to assure that each member of OHS is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.  GSA believes that such an atmosphere engenders a positive sense of self, which is the basis of educational achievement and personal growth.  Since homophobia undermines a healthy school climate, GSA works to educate teachers, students, and community about the damaging effects these forces have.  GSA welcomes all individuals regardless of sexual orientation.  This group meets once a week.

German Club

In German Club the students participate in activities such as:  playing German games (i.e. card games), watching German movies, going out to eat at German restaurants, cooking German food, singing and listening to different German songs, and playing sports.  From April 1 to April 26 OHS will host a group of 26 students and two teachers from our sister school in Langen, Germany.

Golf – Boys (Spring Sport)

Each person must have his own full set of clubs and soft spike golf shoes.  Practices are held immediately after school at the Foxboro Golf Club or driving range.  Students must provide their own transportation to and from practices.  The team consists of 20 members.  Appropriate dress is required (no jeans or tee-shirts).

Golf – Girls (Fall Sport)

The Oregon Girls Golf Team has grown a lot in the past few years.  It is a great way to meet people and all you need are some golf clubs.  There are six varsity spots and six JV spots, but most teams have more than 12 girls so everyone will get a chance to golf.  Practice starts in August.  If you are interested in playing contact Frank LaVoy at 835-5794.

Hockey – Boys (Winter Sport)

OHS is proud to be sponsoring their own hockey program.  Practices make you work hard to achieve your goals.  The players and coaches are easy to get along with and always have time for fun.  Practices are held at the McFarland Ice Arena every day of the week.  Games are on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.  You will learn how to work as a team, be competitive, and strive to be the best.

Imagine

Imagine is a peer education group that exposes damaging behaviors, thoughts, and beliefs that may lead to sexual assault, harassment, and violence in our community.  We promote healthy relationships and positive body images.  We become educated on the power of negative media images.  We attend three trainings throughout the year that are conducted by the Rape Crisis Center of Dane County to plan for Sexual Assault Awareness month in April.

Intramural Sports

Intramural sports are a great way to stay active and have fun with your friends.  Throughout the school year there are several “seasons” of different sports, each lasting six to eight weeks.  The designated team captain will gather a small group to form a team and play against other teams once a week.  This can be highly competitive or minimally competitive, it is great for everybody!

Link Crew

Link Crew is a group of older students dedicated to helping new students feel welcomed and included at OHS.  They are trained in the summer and lead the student orientation a few days before school starts.  In addition, they are assigned approximately ten new students and will contact those students periodically to see how their year is going.  Link Crew also hosts various events during the year to promote positive connections within the building.

Model UN

This club is for anyone interested in the United Nations, solving global problems, and spending four days in a ritzy downtown Chicago hotel.  Representing a new country each year, we attend a conference based on the United Nations with thousands of students from across the country.

National Honor Society

Juniors that have accumulated at least a 3.7 GPA are invited to join this prestigious organization.  Members are involved in activities throughout their senior year, including publicity, community service, and the organization of an induction ceremony.  Few clubs are more highly revered by colleges, scholarship committees, and employers.

OHS Musicians

Musicians are involved in many extracurricular activities.  You can be a member of a jazz combo (lead instruments and rhythm section), string quartet (two violins, viola, and cello), or a bluegrass band (fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar, bass, and vocals).  All are student directed and many of the OHS ensembles play in the community for both voluntary and paid gigs!

Oregon Marching Band

Oregon Marching Band is an awesome and unique opportunity for students in grades 8 – 12 who enjoy playing their instruments, dancing, traveling, meeting new people, and performing.  You do not need to be in band at the present time to sign-up; you can be part of the color guard team or pick up your old instrument and we will help you bring your skills to the next level.  We will tour for four weeks in the summer.  If you enjoy music, friendships, a family atmosphere, and world travel, the one-and-only Oregon Marching Band is for you!  Every member of our band is important; so come be a part of something great.

Paw Print

The Paw Print is Oregon High School’s student newspaper.  It is run by and written by the students at OHS.  The Paw Print covers a wide variety of topics including local and national news, sports, and entertainment.  Staff meetings are held after school on Mondays and all writers are welcome to attend.  If you are interested, contact Mr. Bruening in room 396.

Poms (Fall and Winter Sport)

Poms is a closely bonded dance team that builds lasting friendships.  The team performs at the halftimes of football, soccer and basketball games.  Other performances include competitions and pep rallys.  Being a part of the squad includes showcasing personal talent, a desire to work hard, self-discipline and a great attitude.  This is one experience you will never forget.

S.A.L.T.

The mission of the Student Asset Leadership Team is to provide asset-building opportunities for all students by promoting a positive, inclusive, and respectful school climate.  S.A.L.T. believes student leadership and team building are essential elements of our journey.

Soccer – Boys (Fall Sport)

If you are interested in soccer come out and join us!  There are three teams:  varsity, JV – orange, and JV – black.  Depending on which team you make will determine how many games you play.  Varsity plays around 24 games and both JV teams play about 18 games.  Come on out and join us and help continue “Our Own Tradition.”

Soccer – Girls (Spring Sport)

Girls soccer is a great opportunity to have some fun, meet new people, and be challenged to become a better player.  We practice both on the field and in the weight room.  Games are usually Tuesdays and Thursdays with tournaments on Saturdays.  So if you want to end your year with a great group of girls and great coaches then come and play soccer.

School To Work

The School to Career Program provides students the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge and to learn hands-on skills at cooperating area businesses.  Through either the youth Apprentice Program or the Certified Skills Program, students may be released from school to go to their worksite where they may work from 10 to 20 hours per week.  Students arrange their class schedule to work in either the mornings or afternoons and earn one credit per semester.

Softball – Girls (Spring Sport)

Oregon Softball competes in one of the toughest conferences in the state.  Many of the past girls have continued their playing career in the college ranks.  The Panthers numbers are growing as they support three teams:  Freshmen, JV, and Varsity.  Everyone is encouraged to participate in summer programs, preseason workouts, and join the various teams to continue to keep Panther Softball swinging!

Spanish Club

Students may join Spanish Club if they are enrolled in a Spanish class.  We meet monthly and eat out at various restaurants during the year.  Spanish club is a fun way to get to know other students and practice the language.

Special Olympics

Special Olympics International provides athletes with cognitive disabilities the opportunity to train and compete all year long.  Our agency offers bowling, basketball, aquatics, athletics (track and field), bocce and golf.  We practice during the school day and on weekends.  Oregon Area Special Olympics also participates in Homecoming and Summer fest activities.  High school students are encouraged to become involved by coaching and volunteering during competitions.

Student Council

Student Council members are leaders of the school.  The staff and students look to the council to make decisions for the student body.  It is also a great way to get to know involved upperclassmen who are working to make the school a better place.  This club is also a lot of fun, the council sponsors many school dances and also does a picnic with the elementary and middle schools.  This club participates in many other service projects throughout the year.  To become a member you must write an essay, gather teacher recommendations, and there is a peer vote.  If you want to help make the school a better place join student council!

Swimming (Boys – Winter Sport)

These hardworking and dedicated young men work hard to achieve their goals both in the pool and academically.  Everyone urges you to surpass your personal goals each and every meet.  Practices include both pool drills and weight lifting.  Dive in and join a great team!

Swimming (Girls – Fall Sport)

If you like to work hard, are dedicated and love to work out, swimming is definitely for you.  Practices include both working out in the weight room and the pool.  The team may not be all that big, but the girls you will meet are unlike anyone you will ever meet.  The team knows how to have fun, and they will push you to work harder than you ever thought possible.  Meets throughout the season take place on Tuesdays (dual meets) and Saturdays during the day (invites).  Swimming is unlike any other sport out there – so go ahead and jump in!  Be part of something great and join the team!

Tech Club

Tech Club is responsible for all the sound and lighting needs in the Performing Arts Center (PAC).  In Tech Club you will learn about microphones and other sound equipment and how to operate and design lights.  We meet every Tuesday from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm in the PAC.

Tennis – Boys (Spring Sport)

The Oregon tennis team is a great sports team to be a part of.  Even if you play tennis often and are an advanced player or you are a beginner and want to try it out, we encourage you to join us.  The atmosphere is laid back and there are many different ability levels.  Many people who are on the JV team are just learning the sport.  Those who are on the varsity team work on fine-tuning their skills.  Overall, the tennis team is a great experience, whether you are a novice or expert.

Tennis – Girls (Fall Sport)

This is a great sport if you are a competitive tennis player who is also looking to have some fun.  The team is all about coming together to help everyone improve their game.  Tennis is an individual sport along with a team effort.  The team also does other fur things like spaghetti dinners and a carwash.  This is a great way to get to know a good bunch of girls.

Track and Field (Spring Sport)

If you enjoy running, racing, throwing, jumping, and having a good time, track and field is the spring sport for you!  Practice is everyday after school starting around March, with competitions about once a week April through May.  Working hard and getting faster and stronger while having a great time is what OHS track and field is all about.  We hope to see you there!

VICA Club – “Skills USA”

If you are interested in a vocational job such as bricklaying, welding, automotive repair, construction, cabinetry, and many more join the OHS VICA Club.  Regional, state, and national competitions are available for the members to complete in against other VICA Clubs around the country and world.  If interested, contact Mr. Zander in room 922.

Volleyball – Girls (Fall Sport

Our season starts in the middle of August and can run to the first week of November.  We incorporate strength training and conditioning into our practices each week.  We attend the weight room twice a week.  Throughout our season we complete in matches on Tuesdays and Thursdays both in Oregon an away.  Our JV program has one tournament on a Saturday while Varsity competes in three away tournaments.

Wrestling (Winter Sport)

Join wrestling.  You will not find a sport tougher than this in high school.  Discover a challenge worthy of your energy level.  Join a sport in which you will use muscles you did not even know you had!  Learn to focus your mind in a way you never thought possible.  Discipline yourself so that your effort in training generates results.  Take control over your success.  Make a difference in your team.  Do yourself a favor, wrestle.

Yearbook

We offer students a good opportunity to get to know their peers and allow them to use their creativity during the production of the yearbook.  We meet every Wednesday from 3:30 pm until 5:00 pm from October until February.

YOU Group

The mission of the OHS YOU Group is to promote acceptance and understanding of all people in our community regardless of background.  YOU Group plans several fun activities to promote acceptance.  Our most popular event is held in the spring and is know as Diversity Week.  During this week we introduce speakers from a variety of backgrounds.  Being a member of YOU Group helps you to understand and accept differences among us.  YOU Group is well known in our school and is a lot of fun to participate in.  Everyone is welcome!
