Leyla Sanyer
Greetings from the Oregon High School Orchestra Room

Leyla Sanyer has just completed her 32nd year of teaching orchestra in Wisconsin Public Schools; the last 22 of them in the Oregon School District.  Curriculum encourages student ownership with instruction in classical performance, composition, improvisation, chamber music and alternative styles (jazz, rock, bluegrass, Celtic).
Music is studied in such a way as to encourage interdisciplinary understandings along with a love for the complexities and beauty of music itself.
Among her former students are teachers at all levels, performers and lovers of music.
Ms. Sanyer is the national 2004 recipient of the Elizabeth A.H. Green Award from the American String Teachers Association.  She has served as southcentral vice-president and orchestra chair of the Wisconsin Music Educators Association and chair of the Comprehensive Musicianship Through Performance Committee.  Leyla is also violinist in the Madison based Oakwood Chamber Players and the Camerata String Quartet (see below).

Curriculum Plans for OHS Orchestras 2009-10

This area of the webpage will familiarize you with plans for the 2009-10 season and the curriculum for the OHS orchestra classroom and small group instruction.

During the 2009-10 school year, the OHS Orchestra (Symphony, Philharmonic, Chamber and Concert) students will focus on analysis in the study of music.  What are the differences between Western and non-Western music?  How can each of us, as individuals, contribute to a greater whole in orchestra and the rest of life?

In this time, an understanding of our role as world citizens appears to be more important than ever. How do our individual musical interest prepare us for a better life after public school?

Grading policies and class expectations will be found in the student folios . The outcome emphasis for 2009-10 will be on:

Solo study (Etudes, scales, orchestral excerpts and solo work)

Chamber Music

Composition (Student work on final concert)

The 2009-10 season will include:

Stacy Duren; Luther College student teacher for first semester (bio to follow)

Special guests; VIBES from the U.W. Madison to assist in chamber music coaching

Violinist and teacher Erica Bjoraker from U.W. Madison (OHS grad)

Ethnomusicologist MIchael O'Brien from Madison area (OHS grad)
