| Group Counseling |
|
Thoughout the school year, students are offered the opportunity to participate in counseling groups. Groups are facilitated by a counselor or psychologist. These are small groups (4-8 students) that meet for 40 to 60 minutes, for approximately six weeks. Small groups provide helpful information on specific topics; give students a safe place to discuss concerns and feelings with children in similar situations; and teach skills that offer opportunities for positive growth and strategies to cope with difficult situations. The following types of groups may be offered:
- Family change (divorce)
- Grief and loss
- Anger management
- Stress management
Individual Counseling
Classroom guidance and small group settings do not always provide enough time or an appropriate place to talk with students. In these cases the school counselor or psychologist will schedule times to meet with students individually. Students, parents, teachers and principals may request individual counseling times. Parents will be notified by the classroom teacher, counselor, or psychologist if individual sessions are needed. Sessions are approximately 30 minutes in length. Appropriate times to have a student leave the classroom are scheduled with the student's teacher.
