School Counselors and Psychologists

Elementary school counselors use a comprehensive developmental school counseling model which provides education, prevention and intervention services for all students.  The goal is to offer:

  • early identification and intervention for students with academic or personal/social needs.
  • provide knowledge and skills which enhance academic achievement, encourage self-awareness, foster interpersonal communication skills and impart life skills for all students.
  • participate with parents and families as they support their child's journey towards personal growth and academic success.
  • a developmental guidance curriculum used in all kindergarten through 4th grade classrooms

This model incorporates:

  • small groups
  • individual counseling
  • consultation and collaboration with elementary school staff, parents and community resources

Elementary school psychologists and school counselors share many aspects of their jobs.  They both provide individual and small group counseling as well as parent and teacher consultation.  School psychologists also provide educational and psychological testing for academic or behavioral concerns.  They are often part of individual education program (IEP) teams for special education.

Contact your school's psychologist or counselor if you have any concerns about your child.
